The 13U LI Prospects improved to 7-3 in the the 14U Boys of Summer league on Thursday in Ronkonkoma with a walk-off win against the MLI Phantoms. On a day when Prospects starting pitcher Brian Porricelli uncharacteristicly struggled with command, Jake Cheshire stepped up with a great effort in long relief. Nick Valeriano was stellar on defense at first base to go with 2 hits and a run scored. Other key contributors on offense were Matt Conry with 2 hits, 2 RBI and a run scored; Alec Acri who went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored; and Chris Wasson who fought off a 1-2 fastball into right center field in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off.

For Fathers Day, Sunday June 16, the Prospects faced the LI Lookouts in a double-header at Port Jeff. The Lookouts put the pressure on in game one when Prospects starter Nick Valeriano was touched up for 6 hits and 5 runs giving the Lookouts a 5-1 lead after 2 innings. The Prospects managed a 3-run fifth inning but had 11 LOB on the day while the Lookouts continued to produce runs heading to an 11-4 final that the Prospects would try quickly to forget.

In game two, Prospects starting pitcher Matt Conry faced just 5 over the minimum picking up 8 Ks and a shut-out. In the top of the first inning, a single up the middle by Nick Valeriano followed by a double to right by Brian Porricelli was all the scoring the Prospects would need en route to a 4-0 win.

Friday June 14 the Prospects had a short ride to East Meadow to face the Mustangs. The Prospects took an early lead when a walk to Billy McAdam and a 2-out RBI single by Matt Conry got the Prospects to 1-0 after one. In the third inning, though, the Mustangs turned a walk and a couple of hits into 3 runs. With the score 3-1 in the middle of four, heavy rain came and washed out the field that was already saturated from earlier in the week and the game was suspended, to be completed at a later date.

Saturday 6/8 the Prospects visited the South Shore Chiefs for a double-header in Massapequa Park. Game one was decidedly for the Prospects as starting pitcher Brian Porricelli held the Chiefs to 2 hits while striking out 7 in six innings of work. Meanwhile RBI hits by Eric Solomon, Alec Acri, and Matt Nilsen were part of a Prospects 5-hit, 6-run fourth inning on the way to a 7-2 victory.

The Chiefs turned the tide in game two. With the score tied 1-1 in the middle of the fourth, South Shore converted 4 hits and a walk into 4 runs and a 5-1 lead as the Prospects went down quietly 6-1.

On Thursday June 6, the Prospects traveled to Holbrook to face the LI Force. The Prospects got on the board first when pitcher Matt Conry helped himself with a two-out RBI single scoring Billy McAdam. After the Force tied it in the second inning, and the score 1-1 in the middle of four, the Prospects got things going in the bottom when a lead-off walk to Nick Valeriano followed by a RBI double by Brian Porricelli led to a 4-run inning and a 5-1 lead. When the Force added a run in the fifth inning to come within three, the Prospects responded with 2 runs in the sixth leading to the 7-2 final.

Ronkonkoma, NY – In Boys of Summer 14U National league play yesterday the LI Prospects defeated Hank’s Yanks 4-3.

The Prospects provided some early charity when a balk and an error combined with 2 hits to get the Yanks on the board and leading 1-0 after one inning. After Prospects starting pitcher Jake Cheshire put the Yanks down in order in the top of the second, the Prospects converted two walks, a single by Matt Nilsen and a double by Brian Porricelli into a 3-1 lead. The Yanks scratched one out in the fourth to get within 1, and the scored remained 3-2 through the middle of the fifth. The Yanks put two quick outs on the Prospects in the bottom. But after Matt Conry singled to right and stole second base, Eric Solomon came through with a base hit up the middle to score Conry and provide a big insurance run. After an error allowed the lead-off hitter to reach for the Yanks and eventually score in the sixth, things could have been worse if not for Prospects’ catcher Matt Coster throwing out the Yanks’ Favola on a big caught-stealing after reaching on the second error of the inning. Prospects’ pitcher Alec Acri entered the seventh in the role of closer to face the top of the Yanks order and protect a 1-run lead. After striking out the first two batters on 7 pitches, Acri got the 3-hitter to pop to center for a 1-2-3 inning and the save.

Of special interest in this game was Yanks’ first base coach — Mickey Rivers! After the game, the Yanks were kind enough to invite the Prospects to take pictures and chat with the former AL All-Star and 2-time World Series Champ who, in addition to his baseball accolades, has always been well-known for his great generosity with kids.

Prospects continue in the BoS when they play the Long Island Force Thursday night at the PAL Complex in Holtsville.

Coram, NY – The LI Prospects got off the BoS schneid yesterday when they swept a doubleheader convicingly from the Diamond Baseball Academy, 10-0 and 11-3.

Game one featured dominant pitching from Prospects’ starter Brian Porricelli. While DBA bats struggled, the Prospects’ offense got going early when a lead-off walk to Billy McAdam was followed with a single by Nick Valeriano, a RBI double by Porricelli and a 2-RBI single by Matt Conry for a 3-0 lead from which they wouldn’t look back. Porricelli, who picked up 2 more RBI with another double in the fourth inning, pitched a run-rule-shortened 5-inning complete game striking out 9.

The Prospects took an early lead in game two when Jack Delaney drew a RBI walk and McAdam dropped a RBI base hit into left for a 2-0 lead through three. Valeriano, pitching for the Prospects, was cruising through two quick outs in the fourth when Diamond Baseball worked 4 hits and 3 Prospects errors into 3 runs and a 3-2 lead. But the Prospects came right back in the fifth with a 1-out single by Valeriano and RBI singles from Porricelli and Eric Solomon to regain the lead, 4-3. The game got out of hand in the sixth when two walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases full of Prospects. McAdam picked up a RBI single and walks to Valeriano and Porricelli loaded them up again. Conry then burned the left fielder for a base-clearing double and later scored on an error for a 7-run inning. Valeriano threw 1-2-3 innings in each of the sixth and seventh for the complete-game victory.

The Prospects face Hanks Yanks Tuesday night in Ronkonkoma.
