Rebels Return to Form, Sweep Express in NJBL Fall Opener
North Bellmore, NY – The Rebels swept a double-header from Nassau Express today in convincing fashion, 12 – 2 and 16 – 9 at Gunther Field today.
They used a variety of pitchers to great effect but the story of the day was about hitting.
Bouncing back from a Labor Day weekend where hits were scarce, the Rebels managed an impressive 19 hits in the two games in generating their 28 runs.
And they continue to apply their learning and experience in ‘real baseball’ on the ‘big field’. NBNM picked Nassau runners off first and second and later threw out a runner attempting a straight steal on a pitch-out. In follow-up to their last practice where the play was introduced, the Rebels even executed a successful suicide squeeze.
Combined with all-around good play, the Rebels led the Express throughout the day and the Nassau team never managed a plausible threat.
The Rebels return to Gunther next Sunday 9/19 at 11:00am to take on the LI Royals.
As a side note to today’s games, some of the improvements Coach Sam has planned for Gunther Field are already appearing. Americans flags now blow at the corneres of the outfield, improvements have been made to scoreboard, and the dugouts have never been clearer (and safer) with the new bat/ball racks and bag-hanging area. Further improvements are in the works including shelving in the dugouts, a concrete deck under the batting cage, a dedicated bullpen area with mound, and more. Great thanks to Sam, Coach Ray and others helping to realize these improvements to our field.
P.S. Happy Birthday Tyler!
