Rebels Win Opener in Oceanside Tourny

Posted by Mike Conry at Jul 6, 2009 7:27PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Island Park, NY – The Rebels relied mostly on dominant pitching and pretty good defense — including a host of well-executed thrown-out-stealing plays — to get by Oceanside American, 3-1, and start the Oceanside Tournament with a record of 1 – 0.

Coach Sam was heard in post-game comments asking for a more aggressive approach to Rebels’ at-bats. "I saw too many of you taking first-pitch strikes right down the middle of the plate", Coach said, "I want ‘one through twelve’ being aggressive, swinging down, and hitting line drives."

Perhaps the Rebels’ bats will awaken when they return to Shell Creek Park Wednesday at 6:00 pm, as the Oceanside Tournament continues.

Rebels Bend But Don't Break

Posted by Mike Conry at Jul 4, 2009 8:33AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Stony Brook, NY – The Rebels defeated the Three Village Yankees, 4-3, Thursday night in another exciting contest. The Yankees had gone unbeaten in their last 18 games before coming up against the scrappy bunch from North Bellmore North Merrick.

Nick 2’s starting pitching and some stellar defensive plays from Kevin 5 kept the Yankees from getting going for most of the ball game. Meanwhile, the Rebels put some hits together and carried a 4-1 lead into the 5th inning.

Jack 8 came into the game in relief to get the last out in the 4th and cruised through the 5th. Things got a little dicey in the 6th after the Yankees started out with back-to-back walks, both of whom eventually scored, and moved to within one, 4-3, with the tying run standing on 2nd base.

Matt 11 did a great job behind the plate blocking three balls in the dirt and keeping the baserunner from advancing.

Finally, Jack coaxed a ground ball out to Alec 14 at 2nd base and the Rebels had won their fourth straight game.

Next week’s schedule features a hiatus from NJBL play as Oceanside and South Shore tournament play begins.

Rebels Hold Off Braves, 7-6

Posted by Mike Conry at Jul 2, 2009 7:07AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

North Bellmore, NY – The Rebels held off the SYAG Braves, 7-6, in a well-played and exciting game Tuesday night.

After the Braves jumped out to any early 1-0 advantage, the Rebels quickly settled down, regained the lead and held it into the 6th inning.

Strong pitching by Kevin 5 kept the Braves at bay as the Rebels offense continued to build their lead with excellent at-bats and clutch hits.

The Braves battled behind their own strong relief pitching and managed to tie the score 6-6 in the top of the 6th, setting the stage for the Rebels to take advantage of their home half.

Billy 20 led off the bottom of the 6th with a well-struck single to right-center field representing the winning run. Billy advanced to second and then third base with heads-up base-running and Matt 11 coming up to bat. From behind in the count, Matt laid down a fine bunt allowing Billy to score and the Rebels to prevail.

Since being swept on their opening Saturday, the Rebels have won three straight and look to get back into the NJBL playoff hunt.

The Rebels travel to Stonybrook tonight to face the first-place Three Village Yankees where the Rebels hope to continue their winning ways.
