Rebels Coast Rematch in South Shore Final

Posted by Mike Conry at Jul 25, 2009 1:39PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

North Bellmore, NY – The Rebels advanced to the championship game of the South Shore tournament by defeating the Glen Cove Comanches yesterday, 9-4.

It was a mostly well-played game by both teams and befitting a tournament semi-final match-up.

Kevin 5 put forth a great effort as the Rebels’ starter. After the Rebels offense got him an early lead he kept the Comanches from establishing any consistent offense. Mike 13 came on in relief and Nick 2 closed it out, both of whom also did a great job on the mound.

The Rebels defense was good and the offense was very good with many hits and excellent at-bats throughout the lineup.

The win sets up a rematch of the 2008 South Shore Tournament final pitting the Rebels against Massapequa Coast. In last year’s meeting, Coast prevailed, 8-2. The Rebels later met Coast at Burns Park in Massapequa in league play where the Rebels won, 4-1.

Tomorrow’s ‘rubber match’, 12:00pm at Gunther Field, is expected to be a great game.

Rebels Drop 2 to Eagles

Posted by Mike Conry at Jul 25, 2009 1:15PM PDT ( 2 Comments )

Hauppauge, NY – The North Bellmore North Merrick Rebels were swept today dropping both ends of a double-header, 8-4 and 3-1, to the Hauppauge Eagles.

The Rebels fell behind early in both games and were decidedly flat throughout the day. Coach Sam in post-game comments described the team’s performance today as "lifeless".

A bright spot was pitching. Matt 11 and Kevin 38 combined in the first game and Alec 14 and Matt 7 worked the second. The pitchers did what was asked of them and kept the Rebels within striking distance in both games.

But the offense left many men on base and was unable to provide consistent output and run support.

The defense, as well, was tentative and inconsistent and allowed Eagles’ innings to be extended.

The two losses puts the Rebels record in NJBL at 6-4 and smack in the middle of a tightly packed field of teams vying for a play-off berth.

The Rebels next NJBL contest is this Tuesday, 7/28, at the SYAG Braves.

North Bellmore, NY – The Rebels defeated the Wantagh Warriors yesterday, 11-5, in a South Shore Tournament quarter-final match-up under steady, light rains at Gunther Field.

The Rebels employed five different pitchers in an effort to conserve pitch counts anticipating a run to the final. Eric 4, Alec 14, Mike 13, Matt 7, and Matt 11 all contributed to a pitching effort that, while yielding far too many bases-on-balls, did enough to keep the Warriors behind throughout the contest.

North Bellmore North Merrick jumped out to an early lead with a 5-run burst in their half of the first including a bomb over the centerfielder’s head by Matt 11 for a 2-RBI double.

While the Rebels did a fair job of putting the ball in the play, some shoddy defense by Wantagh helped the Rebels keep several innings alive and produce runs. Matt 26 took advantage with a clutch, 2-out single to drive in two in the fourth.

The Rebels defense was good and their middle infield of Alec 14 and Billy 20 platooning at second-base with Jack 8 at short, converted many fielder’s choices and some bang-bang plays at first on attempted double-plays.

All in all, it was a serviceable effort that sets the stage for a semi-final game tomorrow night 6:00pm at Gunther Field against the winner of tonight’s Baldwin Blue Rays/Glen Cove Comanches match-up.

Rebels Win Oceanside American Summer Tournament

Posted by Mike Conry at Jul 20, 2009 11:42AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Oceanside, NY – The Rebels defeated the host team, Oceanside American, 11-5, in the final game of the Oceanside American Summer Tournament yesterday. After a 2008 season of ‘always a brides-maid, never a bride’, this was the first championship in this Rebels team’s short history.

North Bellmore North Merrick put forth a strong, balanced, and complete effort including strong starting pitching from Nick 2 and steady offense via productive at-bats throughout the lineup.

Every Rebels batter either hit the ball hard or reached base. Jack 8, Alec 14, Nick 2, and Kevin 5 each had a multiple-hit game.

Worth noting, too, was the Rebels fine outfield play. All outfielders were exlemplary with their hustle getting to balls, backing one another up and backing up infield play. These are things that don’t always show up in stat lines but are real difference-makers just the same.

Mike 13 perfectly played a ball that was driven to the fence through the left-centerfield gap, threw a strike to the cut-off man, and held the hitter to a double (the hitter was ultimately stranded at second). He also caught every fly ball hit his way. Matt 26 made an outstanding play in right field gunning down an Oceanside player at first base, turning what appeared to be a single into an out. Matt also made a great catch on a hard, sinking line drive while looking into the sun.

The feeling from the team, coaching staff, families and fans is that this is the first title of many to come in the future for this group of outstanding 9-year-old players and young men.

The Rebels return to the South Shore Tournament this Tuesday night with a 6:00pm quarter-final match-up against Wantagh at Gunther Field.
