Rebels Make Impressive Run at BBH LDC

Posted by Mike Conry at Sep 8, 2009 7:13AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Yaphank, NY – The Rebels reached the end of their impressive run at the Baseball Heaven Labor Day Championships yesterday capping a four-day weekend of great baseball and great fun.

The Rebels stayed hot completing pool play on Sunday with a gutsy 8-7 win over the LI Inferno Black. The back-and-forth battle featured notable performances by Eric 4 making great and critical plays in left field and Alec 14 whose pitching and hitting were clearly keys to the team’s success. Many contributed in this exciting contest.

The victory moved the Rebels to 4-0 in pool play and earned them the #1 seed of the four teams — NBNM, Inferno, Connetquot Chiefs, Stratford (CT) Titans — moving on to Monday’s play-off rounds.

North Bellmore North Merrick returned to Baseball Heaven Monday morning for their semi-final matchup with the Titans.

The Connecticut kids featured a pitcher with a tremendous off-speed pitch that kept the Rebels batters off balance most of the day. NBNM managed to manufacture a run in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Rebels starter Nick 2, in spite of not having his best stuff early, relied on the Rebels best defensive game of the tournament while he got stronger as the game progressed and tougher as the pressure grew.

Kevin 38 came through in the bottom of the fifth smoking an RBI triple into the left-centerfield alley and tacking on a big insurance run for the Rebels to take a 2-0 lead into the sixth.

Nick came out in the sixth for his most dominant inning of the day, K’ing the final two Stratford batters, sealing the complete game victory, and propelling the Rebels into the final.

The win moved the Rebels’ mark to a perfect 17-0 in 2009 tournament play.

After a four-hour wait, the stage was set for a Rebels/Inferno rematch in the championship game.

This one was not to go the Rebels’ way.

The Inferno came out with bats ablaze posting a four- and a five-spot in the first two innings for a 9-0 lead before the Rebels knew what hit them. The boys in black produced hits up and down their lineup while the Rebels could not do the same. The Rebels defense could not make big plays and gave up many extra bases and extended innings. After all was said and done, the Inferno defeated the Rebels decisively, 15-3.

So, while not nearly as sweet as the top spot — but certanly better than a sharp stick in the eye, the second place finish is the culmination of four days of great work and great fun and an accomplishment to be proud of.

The Rebels continue with practice scheduled Wednesday night 7:00-8:00 at Sportsplex and a double-header against Smithtown Saturday 9:00a at Saw Mill Road School to kick-off the fall season.

Rebels Improve to 3-0 in BBH Tournament

Posted by Mike Conry at Sep 5, 2009 9:13PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Centereach, NY; Yaphank, NY – The Rebels defeated the Suffolk County Strikers and the Longwood Lions in the ongoing Baseball Heaven Labor Day Championship Tournament today to improve to a perfect 3-0 after the first two days of pool play. North Bellmore North Merrick outscored their opponents 10-2 and 9-3, respectively.

The Rebels trailed at the start of both games but found a way to turn the tides and, ultimately, dominate the contests. They are now guaranteed a game on Monday in the semi-final play-offs.

Kevin 5 started the 10:00 game at Levitt Ballfield Park and held the Strikers scoreless over four innings with his overpowering fastball and excellent change-up. Mike 13 wrapped things up on the mound with a solid and gutsy performance.

Jack 8 was the starter in the Lions game that started at 12:46. He showed great command of both his pitches despite a couple of misplays by the defense behind him. Unfortunatley, he was forced to leave the game in the third inning due to soreness in his right elbow and is listed as day to day. Matt 7, in relief, pitched out of a jam in the third and threw no-hit ball in his three innings of work finishing with a 6-pitch sixth.

Both games today featured valuable contributions from every member of the Rebels. With the good pitching, there was some fine defense, timely and impressive hitting, and productive at-bats.

Alec 14 swung a red hot bat scorching balls and drving in runs in both games.

Nick 2 had two put-outs at the plate in the late game and continued hitting hard line drives to all fields.

Matt 11 threw out baserunners, drove a triple to deep right field in the first game, and had a clutch, 2-RBI single to right in the second

Eric 4 provided several hard hit balls including a key ground ball to the right side for a big run in the first game that helped the Rebels pull away. He also made made a nice play to snatch a low liner in left for the final out of the second game.

Billy 20, as he so often does, hit the ball hard, reached base and scored often. He provided solid defense at second base and in the outfield.

Matt 26, despite feeling under the weather early on, had an excellent day with the glove at third and at bat.

Kevin 38 continued his hard-hitting ways and even stole home in the early game due to his own great heads-up and hustle.

Tyler 1 hit the ball hard all day including a deep single in the left-centerfield gap and an even deeper home run that rattled off the left-centerfield fence.

Both wins were true team efforts.

The Rebels face The Long Island Inferno Black tomorrow, 2:00pm, at Baseball Heaven in the final pool game to determine the number 1 and 2 seeds for Monday’s play-offs.
