Rebels Split With Yankees

Posted by Mike Conry at Oct 12, 2009 9:45AM PDT ( 1 Comment )

Centereach, NY – The Rebels met the previously undefeated Three Village Yankees Saturday in NJBL league play splitting a double-header with a 7-4 win and a 7-4 loss.

The Rebels charged hard out of the gate in game one putting up crooked numbers in each of the first two innings and maintaining their lead throughout the contest.

Rebels starting pitcher Kevin 5 was dominant and very effectively changed his speeds and changed his locations keeping Yankees hitters off balance.

In game two the Yankees bats came alive in a big way as they put together a flurry of extra-base hits in the first inning hanging a 5-spot on the board before the Rebels digested their between-games snack.

The Rebels, however, did not surrender. The pitching and defense settled down and the offense chipped away at the lead.

Mike 13 was very good in relief showing nice velocity, control and, again, changing speeds and locations.

NBNM pulled to within two runs, 6-4, in the fourth but that was as close as they would get.

Overall, this was a day when the Rebels performed well and, with the kids from Three Villages, put a very nice and entertaining product on the field.

The 1-1 showing moved the Rebels into sole posession of 2nd place in the NJBL 9 American divison.

The Rebels next game is at home against Brentwood, Saturday 10/17 at 10:00am.

Rebels Fortunate to Get Split With LIAS

Posted by Mike Conry at Oct 8, 2009 9:22PM PDT ( 2 Comments )

North Bellmore – The Rebels split their double-header with the LIAS Sharks Sunday at Gunther Field, winning the first game 8-4 and losing the second 6-3.

After rainy weather caused the games to be moved from Saturday morning to a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the Rebels played mostly ugly baseball.

Both games featured too many walks from Rebels pitching and dire lack of Rebels hitting.

To their credit, the Rebels limped along well enough in game one to carry a 2-1 lead throughout most of it. LIAS fought back, though, and, with a couple of key hits in the bottom of the sixth, forced extra innings.

The Rebels regained the lead, 3-2, in the top half of the seventh only to reliquish it again in the bottom half when LIAS tied it, 3-3.

With the two-hour time limit looming, the Rebels finally opened things up in the eighth scoring another go ahead run and tacking on four more. The Sharks scratched out one more run in the bottom of the eighth but Eric 4 put out the fire.

In game two the Sharks took an early lead and never looked back. The kids from North Bellmore North Merrick couldn’t or wouldn’t reach down for something extra.

The Sharks drew a lead-off walk in all six innings.

While the scoreboard often suggested the game was close and the Rebels had the tying run on base on a couple of occasions, NBNM could not get a clutch hit. Hits, in general, were scarce and by the time it was over the Rebels had gone down without much of a fight.

The Rebels travel to Three Villages Saturday morning to face the Yankees.

REbels Take 2

Posted by Sam Acri at Sep 27, 2009 6:13AM PDT ( 1 Comment )

In Mike’s absence I will provide a quick recap from Saturday’s Double Header.

The first game was a classic pitching dual; Nicky V dominated the mound for 4 innings allowing no runs and two hits. Michael P took the mound for the last two innings and preserved a 1-0 victory for the Rebels. Eric S had an outstanding at-bat where he proceeded to foul off 7 to 8 balls before coming up with the game winning RBI.

The second game was a classic Rebel Victory; the team scored 9 runs on big hits from many players. With K-Mac settling in for 4 innings of strong pitching and Jack D closing the deal, the team went on to a 9-4 victory.

Ripken Recap

Posted by Mike Conry at Sep 22, 2009 12:01PM PDT ( 4 Comments )

Aberdeen, MD – The Rebels returned Sunday from their trip down to Maryland having participated in the 2009 Ripken Pennant Fever Tournament. It was an opportunity to face some excellent competition but also for Rebels players, coaches and families to get away together and have some fun!

After a morning of traveling south through light traffic under sunny skies, folks arrived throughout Friday afternoon and the kids assembled in the indoor pool at the Aberdeen Holiday Inn.

Everyone was rightly looking forward to a great weekend.

As Friday night approached, the dads and kids headed out to Camden Yards to take in the Orioles/Red Sox game. Thanks again to Chris McCleneghan who was the catalyst and financier of this night out.

After the ride down to Baltimore, with time before the game to take in the sights and appreciate the many niceties of the beautiful ball park, the first of the MLB "downtown retro" style stadiums, they entered at Eutaw Street walking along the famous restored B&O warehouse. Eutaw Street was abuzz with places for eats, drinks, souvenirs and more. Embedded in the concrete of the street’s surface are currently 48 bronze plaques commemorating the player, team, date and spot of each home run that has landed on the street since the stadium opened in 1992 (Ken Griffey Jr has the only one ON the warehouse wall). Everyone thought that was pretty cool.

When people broke out to grab some food, some folks headed over to "Boog’s Barbeque" and met the big fellow and former member of "the lumber company" himself who easily provided autographs to any who asked. Granted, the kids had no idea who this decidedly non-athletic looking senior citizen was despite his being #83 on the all-time MLB HR list (339), 2-time World Series champion (1966, 1970), 1970 AL MVP, and a perennial all-star slugger through the late 60’s into the early 70’s.

Everyone sat together for the game with a nice view of the action in the third tier behind home plate. Boston beat the O’s 3-1 in a mostly uneventful game (save for the infamous hidden Dibs ice cream incident). But the stadium was very nice, the weather was beautiful, the company was great, and a good time was had by all.

Saturday morning, game play began for the 2009 Ripken Pennant Fever Tournament.

The Rebels drew the Staten Island Falcons at "AA" field for their first pool-play game. The Rebels led early then let the Falcons get close but ultimately buttoned down the win, 5-3.

The second game Saturday was played in the beautiful "Cal Sr.‘s Yard", a 2000-seat stadium that is a miniature replica of Orioles Park at Camden Yards — including a ’warehouse’ in right field that is a Marriot Courtyard hotel.

The Rebels fell behind early to the Olney Pirates. But North Bellmore North Merrick fought back and got to within one run entering the fifth. Unfortunately, then the wheels flew off for the Rebels in giving up the proverbial ‘big inning’. The Pirates posted a 10-run sixth and when it was over the Rebels were defeated 19-8.

The Rebels ended the day 1-1 but with 22 runs-against in the tie-breaker column hopes were low for a play-off berth.

By the time the team had gathered in downtown Baltimore’s Little Italy for dinner Saturday night, they learned that 17 runs-against was the cut-off for the play-off round.

In what was essentially a consolation game at 8:00 A.M. Sunday, the Rebels headed to ‘Fenway’ to face the Staten Island Falcons for a second time. The Falcons took an early lead that began a see-saw battle throughout the game. The Rebels took a 7-6 lead into the sixth inning but the Falcons managed to plate two to go ahead 8-7. So, the home team Rebels needed to pull out their hammer in the bottom half, and did, with a walk-off hit and a 9-8 victory.

In the end, the Rebels placed 7th in a field of 13 teams.

All in all, the trip was a lot of fun and a great and memorable experience for all involved.
