Rebels to Playy for NJBL Championship

Posted by Sam Acri at Aug 11, 2010 7:44PM PDT ( 1 Comment )

The Rebels moved into the NJBL Championship series tonight with a 3-0 win over the 3-Village Yankees.
Kevin McCleneghan proved to be all the Rebels would need throwing a one hitter over the high powered 1seed. Kevin would not be denied the complete game shut out, covering first base from the mound to get the last out of the game, something his dad is trying to take credit for, but we all know better.
The boys will travel to Mattituck in Saturday morning to compete for the Championship, well deserved I may add.

Rebels Speed to South Shore Championship

Posted by Sam Acri at Aug 10, 2010 8:05PM PDT ( 1 Comment )

Do you want to know how to win a Championship, its easy, just become the coach of a great group of boys known as the Rebels.
The boys were asked to defend there South Shore Championship against a very tough opponent, in turn they responded with great pitching, great defense, great base running and a few hits along the way. Jack Delany’s long double in the first and Alec Acri’s two bagger in the second let the opposing pitcher know the boys came to play. The Rebels put the ball in Nicky Vavleriano’s hand for the second year in a row and asked him to do what he does best, throw strikes and win us a big game. Nicky was ahead on almost every batter he faced and allowed just 3 base runners the entire night..
The game remained scoreless until the top of the 6th when Brain Porricelli introduced himself to Massapequa with an infield single, move to second on a wild pitch and a delayed steal of third that shuck up the catcher who proceeded to throw the ball into right field allowing him to score the only run of the game.
Nicky moved to the bottom of the 6th and with only 4 pitches remaining managed to get two outs, Brian P came in to strike out the last batter of the night, game over 1-0 Rebels win.
Foot Note # 1:
In the 3 years the Rebels have played in the SS Tournament there overall record for the 3 years is 17 -1.
Foot Note # 2
In the 7 years the SS Tournament has been around, no team has one it 2 years in a row, until now.

Rebels on a Roll

Posted by Sam Acri at Aug 8, 2010 10:56AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Rebels came to play today, needing to win one game to qualify for the NJBL playoffs the boys won both.
The first game was highlighted by another great pitching performance by Michael Proios going 1 batter short of a complete game shutout. The game also saw 2 perfectly executed double plays (6-4-3) & (6-6-3), the defense was absolutely flawless.
With the tying run at the plate, Nicky V wasn’t letting his buddy Michael down and struck out the last batter of the game.
The second game put Brian P on the mound who did a good job keeping the Rebels in the game, although the boys feel behind early 3-1, some key hits by Alec Acri, Billy McAdam & Kevin Weber the boys would fight back to a 3-3 tie.
The top of the 5th saw the Rebels do there thing with great base running, included was Alec Acri’s steal of home when the pitcher dropped the ball on a throw back (proving its more about timing than speed).
Great time for the team to be peeking, lets have some fun this week, you deserve it.

Rebels Bend But Don't Break

The Rebels responded to Coach Sam’s request before the game to find a way to win the close ones and that they did.
In the South Shore Tournament quarter final game against Baldwin, the boys did what ever was necessary to win 4 to 3.
Behind another great outing by Nicky V and some big hits by Billy Mac, the Rebels prevailed.
Although Coach Sam had 3 runner’s thrown out at the plate, the boys found a way to bail out there coach, Thanks boys.
Especially young Mr. Conry who made the game saving play to end the game.
