Brentwood, NY – The Long Island Prospects completed a clean sweep in the 2014 Boys of Summer Memorial Day Shootout with a 2-1 victory over the Brentwood Braves today at Brentwood State Park. The championship game concluded a three-day weekend in which the Prospects went 6-0 while scoring 31 runs to just 4 against in their first tournament of the 2014 season.

The ’Spects opened up Saturday with shutout wins over the NY Nationals (3-0) and Batting 1000 Seminoles (10-0). Pool play concluded on Sunday after the Prospects beat the Hitters Club Hawkeyes (7-3) and the Diamond Spikes (8-0). Their perfect record and 3 runs-against made then them the #1 seed for the play-off rounds on Monday.

Monday morning the Prospects faced the #4 seed PJ Sports Storm in a 1-0 game that featured fine pitching and defense. But the highlight of this one was the PERFECT GAME thrown by Prospects pitcher Chris Wasson! Wasson demonstrated fantastic command of three pitches including a dominant fastball en route to sitting down twenty-one straight Storm batters.

The tournament final was another closely played contest. After the Prospects scored in the fourth, starter Tyler Manger had worked five shut-out innings until, in the Braves’ sixth, a lead-off single, a wild pitch, and a ground-out, was followed by a two-out ‘swinging bunt’ that plated the tying run for Brentwood. When the game remained knotted at 1 after 7 innings had completed, ‘California Tiebreaker’ rules kicked in for the 8th. With Nick Valeriano pitching in relief for the ‘Spects, a Brentwood sacrifice bunt was misplayed into first-and-third for the Braves. The Prospects issued a free pass to Brentwood’s three-hitter to set up a force at any base. After getting ahead 0-1, Valeriano coaxed a ground ball from the Braves four-hitter that was played from Manger, now at third base, to catcher Brian Donnelly for the 5-2 put-out. With 1 out and the bases still loaded with Braves, Prospects left fielder Billy McAdam snared a sinking line drive and fired to Manger at third base to double off the base runner and end the Brentwood inning without a score. With the Prospects last-batted-out Jack Delaney awarded second base for the tie-breaker in the Prospects’ eighth, he immediately caught the pitcher napping and swiped third without a throw. McAdam then hit a hard ground ball against a drawn-in infield that was speared by the shortstop who couldn’t convert the throw and the Prospects had first-and-third with no one out. The Braves intentionally walked Eric Solomon to set up a force play at any base. But Nick Valeriano subsequently worked a tough seven-pitch at-bat into a walk that pushed the winning run across.
