Prospects Knocked Out in Todd Caden Semi-Final

Posted by Long Island Prospects on Apr 22 2013 at 11:13PM PDT in 2013 Spring-Summer

Yaphank, NY – The Long Island Prospects were eliminated from the Baseball Heaven Todd Caden Memorial tournament on Sunday when they were shutout 3-0 in their semi-final play-off with the Bellport Braves. Their ongoing struggle to awaken their offense from winter hibernation was their undoing. Credit the Braves’ starting pitcher Borelli who successfully spotted a good fastball for 6 and two-thirds innings and made it no easier for the Prospects’ bats to get going.

While the Braves scratched out a run in each of the first, second and fourth innings, the Prospects managed to put men on base in every one of their half innings. But the clutch hit to get on the board would not come.

In the home sixth, after back to back singles by Brian Porricelli and Matt Conry, the Prospects got the tying run to the plate but again the offense sputtered.

In the last of the seventh still trailing 3-0, the Prospects’ Chris Wasson drove a ball past the Braves left fielder for a triple but that’s where he stood stranded when the final out was recorded.

Pulling off the #2 seed with the offense sputtering badly as it did last weekend does bode well, though, for when the bats surely come together. With just two and a half weeks before the team returns to BBH for the May 10 LI Spring Challenge, we will see how the Prospects make use of the time and bounce back to the level of performance we’ve come to expect.
