Yaphank, NY – The LI Prospects completed pool play yesterday with 5-2 and 10-2 victories over Pride 9 and Storm Select, respectively, to clinch their division in the BBH Todd Caden memorial and secure a bid in tomorrow’s semi-final play-off round. While their game play is still far from mid-season form, the Prospects have found ways to win and compile a respectable 22 runs-for to 7 runs-against in the 3-game pool round.

In the early game, the Pride 9 from Stamford, CT were clearly a quality team stacked with big players. But the performance of Prospects’ starter Brian Porricelli was bigger. Despite some early struggles to fully command his fastball, Porricelli got stronger as the game went on scattering just 2 hits over 6 innings while striking out 9. Solid defensive play included 2 more assists by Jake Cheshire hosing runners at second from behind the plate. Offensively, the Prospects managed just 4 hits but took advantage of Pride pitching control problems in the fifth inning with base-on-balls RBIs by Will Shaw and Brian Porricelli to take a 2-1 lead, and picked up two big insurance runs in the seventh when Matt Conry muscled a 1-2 fastball to the opposite field that got past the right fielder for a double.

The Prospects were the recipient’s of substantial charity from Storm Select to start the afternoon game when six walks and a hit in inning 1 gave them a 5-0 lead. Storm pitching settled down until the Prospects’ half of the sixth when hits by Matt Coster, Matt Nilsen, and Ty Manger were followed by a walk-off double to left by Will Shaw to clear the bases completing a five-run inning and the run-rule victory.

The Prospects will be the #2 seed in today’s play-offs behind Team BBH plus two other teams — including a semi-final opponent at #3 — that will be determined by this morning’s final pool games. The semi-final game will be played at 2:45pm.
