Rusty Prospects hold off Mustangs in season opener

Posted by Long Island Prospects on Apr 19 2013 at 08:08PM PDT in 2013 Spring-Summer

Yaphank, NY – The 13U LI Prospects won their first game of 2013 with a 7-3 defeat of the Middle Country Mustangs in Baseball Heaven’s Todd Caden Memorial Tournament. This was the first of three pool games that will determine the field for Sunday’s play-off rounds.

Prospects starting pitcher Chris Wasson provided a strong outing allowing just one run on one hit while picking up four strikeouts and the win in his three innings of work.

The Prospects offense provided some early run support when Matt Conry, thinking he got a suicide squeeze sign, legged the bunt into a single and was followed with base hits from Alec Acri and Nick Valeriano to take an early 3-1 lead after one inning. But the bats were eerily quiet the rest of the way.

Both teams showed early-season rust and, perhaps, the ill effects of poor weather conditions on a cool, wet and foggy night, in providing far too much charity by way of walks, errors and sloppy play.

The Prospects’ Jacob Cheshire picked up two RBI on a single in the fifth. Defensively, highlights were two caught-stealing assists from catchers Cheshire and Jack Delaney, and a fine assist by center fielder Brian Porricelli who turned what looked to be a Mustangs hit in the fifth inning into an uncommon fielder’s choice 8-5 put-out.

The Prospects look for a return to characteristic smart and crisp baseball when they complete the pool round tomorrow with an 8:00am game against Stamford Connecticut’s Pride Nine and a 12:30pm contest with Storm Select from Lynbrook.
